Shimano Deore Groupset Review

While Shimano continue to create some of the best road bike groupsets today, more recently Shimano have begun to manufacturer a fantastic range of mountain components. One of the best mountain biking products they have created is the Shimano Deore groupset.

The Deore groupset is ideal for MTB style bikes and offers cyclists durable, high performing components. In particular, many of our testers commented on the Deore’s braking system, with a powerful hydraulic disc brake system and V-Brake system. The Deore has been proven to offer cyclists precise and smooth braking that works well in all weather conditions.

The cassette sprockets of the Deore features wide-range Mega-9 gearing as well as Shimano pioneering HyperGlide sprockets. The HG sprockets possess specifically positioned shift ramps and perfect tooth profiles for quick shifts which are ultimately smooth and quiet. Shimano Deore groupset also feature a sturdy 2 piece front cranksets, which impressively possesses a chainring combination suitable for off-road mountain biking. Shimano have ensured that the crank arm possesses the optimum level of rigidity, guaranteeing effective power transfer. The shifts of the crankset are notably smooth, even when pressure is applied.

The Deore groupset also comes complete with a 9-speed super narrow HG chain, with tests showing that it switched effortlessly between ratios. The front derailleur are one of the most remarkable features of the Deore, its multi clamp / dual pull construction offer riders a wide link design. The careful design of the front derailleur offers riders easy access as well as better clearance between tire and FD inner chain guard. The rear derailleur offered precise and reliable shifting and is available in two versions, either Shadow or Top Normal as well as in two distinct colours. Many testers commented that this variety is not always available to mountain bikers.

The Deore groupset also includes Rapidfire Plus shifters, a perfect option for mountain bike riders. Their intricate design ensures that they are comfortable while also offering riders quick and precise shifts. The hubs of the Deore are available in a number of different designs, with standard hubs for V-Brake equipped bikes to Center Lock for riders who prefer disc brake systems.

Choice is one of the most noticeable benefits of the Shimano Deore groupset; very few mountain bike groupsets offer such a variety in the components available. But more importantly, Shimano’s Deore offers high-performance components to riders for comfortable trekking, whilst also ensuring each component is smooth, reliable and durable.
