Campagnolo Super Record Groupset Review

One of the most aggressive and high performing groupsets created by Campagnolo is the Super Record; featuring a variety of technologically advanced features and new model designs the Super Record is a fantastic addition to the Campagnolo.

The Super Record Ultra-Torque crankset is available in two different versions. Both options offer cyclists Campagnolo’s new X.P.S.S large chainring, newly designed chainrings that feature 8 pins to lift the chain and 2 to lower it and new teeth design has created one of the most precise, smooth and quick front shifting systems. While the Super Records crankset unidirectional carbon fibre arms and light alloy chainring bolts guarantees a lightweight crankset. The CULT greaseless ceramic bearings ensure the crankset is maintenance free as well as offering low resistance spins.

The Ergopower levers of the Super Record are another great feature of this groupset. The new body housing material, redesigned cable housing paths and original titanium hardware and bearing create a remarkably comfortable and responsive lever. More impressive is the new ratchet mechanism, which is guaranteed to produce more firmer and tactile shifts. Many testers commented that the new mechanism enable them to shift up 3 cogs and down 5 cogs at a time, a fantastic aspect which will be invaluable during intensive rides.

The front and rear derailleur maintain Campagnolo’s high standards, with the 2011 front derailleur featuring a new outer linkage which tests revealed significantly improved the speed and accuracy of shifts throughout every ratio. The rear derailleurs carbon fibre upper and lower body is rigid and will impress the most aggressive cyclist. Its carbon fibre parallelogram and exclusive Ultra-shift geometry ensures riders a fast and smooth shifting performance.

The cassette of the 2011 Super Record remains the same as the previous model, retaining its six titanium sprockets and an alloy lockring. The original support frame for the 2nd and 3rd sprocket triplet and sprocket synchronisation design creates stiff, silent, quick and precise shifting, which testers said was noticeable from the first shift.

Campagnolo have made slight improvements to the newly released Super Record braking system, introducing lightened and improved brake set pad holders. These new holders feature a mechanical snap fit pad retainer for faster shoe replacement. While the dual and single pivot differentiated braking system offers better power modulation and enhances the Super Record braking performance. The new compound braking pads offer powerful braking in both wet and dry conditions.

Weighing less than 1,900 grams, the Super Record is one of the lightest groupsets available to cyclists today. While its impressive performance enhancing features, including levers that provide a more encouraging shift action and the impressive dual-power rear brake system that offers more controlled braking as well as a more professional design, every rider can expect to be impressed by this remarkable groupset.
